Broughton Reordering Project

Help us to raise £50,000 to preserve, renew and reimagine St Andrewʼs Church, Broughton

The spire of St Andrewʼs is the first thing you see of Broughton as you approach the village. The church has been at the centre of worship and community life in the village for hundreds of years.

We all have different connections to the church. It may be that your family has had many generations married there. You might remember school services when you were younger. Or singing carols there at Christmas. You may have been to Parade services remembering those from the village who died in the World Wars. You might sit in the church for some quiet during the day. Or maybe you simply enjoy walking your dog through the churchyard.

We at St Andrewʼs have plans to preserve, renew and reimagine the building to keep this legacy going for generations to come. We are asking for your help to raise the funds to create a space that can be better used by the whole community.

You may have questions about what these plans look like, so please read on for more details, or visit the church during the day to look at our display boards. If you would like to contact me about this, or about anything else, please get in touch. Thank you for your support.

Our aim

St Andrewʼs Church has been at the heart of our community for over 800 years. Eight centuries of christenings, marriages and funerals. But the centuries have taken their toll. Broken windows. Holes in the floor. Rising damp. We canʼt allow our village church to continue to decay.

Our goal is to:

• Improve disabled access

• Repair the broken windows

• Seal out the damp

• Fix the broken and uneven floors

• Replace hazardous pipework

• Repoint the stonework

• Improve the plumbing and drainage

• Install a new heating system to reduce thermal stress

• Allow more flexibility for life events

We are trying to raise the money needed to preserve the historic church building. Renew its ability to host life events. And reimagine its place at the centre of our village. But we canʼt do this without your help. We need to raise the remaining £50,000 to make this vision a reality.

A Historic Church

In its eight-century history, St Andrewʼs has evolved to meet the needs of the present whilst respecting its rich heritage. The 12th century stonework around the south door; the 13th century tower; the 14th century chancel and the north and south aisles; the distinctive 17th century octagonal clockface, and the bells which joined it in the 18th; the Victorian window glass and their heating pipework that visitors to the church have been tripping over ever since. And more recent additions, such as the memorial stained-glass window, for those from this parish who gave their lives in World War I.

But the needs of the community continue to change as does the technology available. We hope to address some of these needs with the changes we make.

In addition to preserving the Churchʼs most historic features, this project aims to allow us to the building to host more events such as:
• Social events and clubs
• A warm space for the community in cold winters
• Recitals and choir performances
• Soft play and family events
• Supporting schools and uniformed childrenʼs groups

Your Church
St Andrewʼs hosts many life events where we have gathered for christenings, weddings, and funerals. These are the events that bring us all together. Our renewal program will create a more flexible and accessible space for these events while preserving the historic fabric, including our 14th century font.

A Green Church
This renewal program will also allow us to go carbon neutral. Replacing the aging and inadequate gas boiler with a modern heat pump, powered by low carbon electricity. This, coupled with a new underfloor heating system, will keep the church at a steady temperature year-round; reducing the damage from thermal stress that is currently eating away at the aging fabric.
